Nature Illustration: Naming Creatures and Responsible Dominion
On a recent hike, I stood mesmerized by the beauty of a small lake nestled in the woods. As I watched the sunlight dance across the water, I noticed a family of ducks gliding gracefully, each movement seemingly choreographed by a divine hand. It reminded me of Jesus’ words in Matthew 6:25-34, where He urges us not to worry, for the birds of the air neither sow nor reap, yet our heavenly Father feeds them.
As I observed those ducks, I recalled a story from my childhood. My father took me to a nearby farm, where he encouraged me to name the animals. I remember the joy and wonder as I called out “Bessie” for the cow and “Clucky” for the chicken. Naming each creature felt like I was participating in God’s creation, reflecting both my responsibility and my privilege as a steward of the earth.
In that moment by the lake, I felt a profound connection — not just to the ducks, but to the very Creator who entrusted us with this world. The ducks, unconcerned with their tomorrow, seemed to whisper a truth: when we trust God with our needs, we are free to embrace our purpose. We, like Adam in the garden, are called to be caretakers, honoring the beauty around us while seeking spiritual growth and guidance.
What might it look like if we approached our worries with that same humility and awe? If we recognized that in naming our burdens, we also claim our role in God’s story?
