Nineteen Years Through Stone

In The Shawshank Redemption, Andy Dufresne is wrongly convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. His friend Red describes the walls of Shawshank as something you first hate, then accept, then depend on. But Andy never accepts those walls. He acquires a tiny rock hammer — small enough to hide inside a hollowed-out Bible — and begins chipping away at the concrete behind a poster in his cell.

No one notices. No one suspects. Night after night, year after year, Andy removes small handfuls of rubble and scatters them in the prison yard during his morning walks. Red later reflects that geology is really just the study of pressure and time. When he first saw that little hammer, he figured it would take a man six hundred years to tunnel out. Andy did it in under twenty.

The writer of Hebrews tells us to "run with perseverance the race marked out for us" (Hebrews 12:1). Most of us want the breakthrough tonight. We want the prayer answered this week, the healing by Sunday, the prodigal home by Christmas. But the Almighty often works the way Andy worked — quietly, persistently, in ways no one else can see.

Your small, faithful obedience matters. Every prayer, every act of trust, every night you choose faith over despair — it is all chipping away at the wall. Pressure and time. That is what the Lord uses too.
