Nineteen Years With a Rock Hammer

In The Shawshank Redemption, Andy Dufresne receives a small rock hammer — a tool so tiny his friend Red jokes that it would take a man six hundred years to tunnel out of prison with it. But Andy isn't laughing. Night after night, year after year, he chips away at the concrete wall behind his poster. He endures beatings, corruption, and the crushing weight of injustice. He never tells a soul what he's doing. For nineteen years, he works in the dark with nothing but a six-inch hammer and an unshakable belief that the wall would eventually give way.

When Andy finally crawls through that tunnel and emerges into the rain on the other side — arms outstretched, face turned toward the sky — we witness what patience looks like when it reaches the other side of waiting.

The writer of Hebrews understood this kind of endurance: "Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus" (Hebrews 12:1-2). God rarely removes the wall overnight. More often, He hands us a rock hammer and invites us to trust Him in the chipping.

Some of you are in year three of a nineteen-year wall. The progress feels invisible. But the God who sees in secret is not wasting a single night of your faithfulness. Keep chipping. The rain is coming.
