Ninety Days That Became Fifteen Years

In January 2004, NASA landed a small rover named Opportunity on the surface of Mars. Engineers designed it for a ninety-day mission — just three months to collect soil samples and photograph the terrain. Nobody expected more. The batteries were small. The wheels were fragile. Mars is brutal.

Opportunity lasted nearly fifteen years.

Through dust storms that choked its solar panels and temperature swings of over two hundred degrees, that little rover kept rolling. It traveled more than twenty-eight miles across the Martian surface — farther than any vehicle has ever driven on another world. When one of its wheels jammed, engineers reprogrammed it to drive backward. When dust covered its panels, Martian winds cleared them just enough to keep going. Ninety days became five thousand.

The Apostle Paul knew something about outlasting expectations. He was shipwrecked, stoned, imprisoned, and left for dead — and he kept moving forward. "We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair" (2 Corinthians 4:8). Like that rover on Mars, Paul was not designed for comfort. He was designed for mission.

Here is the good news for every weary soul this morning: God does not design His children for ninety-day faith. He builds endurance into us by His Spirit — the kind that outlasts every storm, every setback, every season of darkness. You were made to keep rolling.
