No Junk in the Blueprint

For decades, scientists called it "junk DNA." When the Human Genome Project mapped our genetic code in 2003, researchers discovered that only about two percent of our DNA actually codes for proteins. The remaining ninety-eight percent? They labeled it genetic junk — leftover noise with no apparent function.

Then came the ENCODE Project. In 2012, over four hundred scientists across thirty-two laboratories published a landmark finding: at least eighty percent of the human genome serves a biochemical purpose. What they had dismissed as worthless was actually regulating genes, switching them on and off, orchestrating the symphony of life at the cellular level. The so-called junk turned out to be essential.

Some of you feel like junk DNA this morning. You look at the people around you who seem to code for something obvious — the leaders, the teachers, the ones whose gifts are visible and celebrated — and you wonder what purpose you serve. You feel like leftover material in God's design.

But the God who knit you together in your mother's womb does not create junk. Every part of you — the quiet strengths, the hidden struggles, the experiences that seem to serve no purpose — is woven into His plan. You may not code for what the world recognizes, but you are sustaining and orchestrating something essential in the Body of Christ.
