Pay It Forward: Faith Working Through Love - Wesleyan (Matthew 25:31-46)
Imagine a bustling, sunlit café on a Saturday morning, filled with the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the soft murmur of conversations. In one corner, a young boy named Trevor sits at a table, his mind racing with a simple yet profound idea. Inspired by a school project, he decides to change the world—not in grand gestures, but in the small, everyday acts of kindness. “What if I help three people,” he thinks, “and they help three more?”
As Trevor’s movement begins to take shape, we see him approach a struggling single mother, juggling her job and her children, her face etched with worry. With a smile, he offers her a hot meal and a few dollars, knowing it might ease her burden, even if just for a moment. The mother, overwhelmed by his generosity, carries that love forward, helping a neighbor in need. This simple act of faith—no matter how small—ripples outward, affecting lives Trevor will never know.
In a similar way, Matthew 25 reminds us of the urgent need for our faith to be intertwined with our actions. Just as Trevor’s belief compelled him to love others, our faith in Christ must spur us to serve those around us. The Apostle Paul tells us in Galatians 5:6 that “faith working through love” is the very heart of our walk with Christ. When we stand before the King at the final judgment, the question will not simply be, “Did you believe?” but rather, “Did your faith produce love?”
Our work—caring for the marginalized, feeding the hungry, visiting the imprisoned—should not be seen as optional extras but as the heartbeat of our faith, the visible manifestation of our love for God and neighbor. Like Trevor, we are called to live out our faith in tangible ways, creating a legacy of love that changes lives.
