Peace Over the Deep
In November 1873, Horatio Spafford stood on the deck of a ship crossing the Atlantic and stared down at the cold water below. Somewhere beneath those waves, his four daughters had drowned just days earlier when the SS Ville du Havre collided with an iron sailing vessel and sank in twelve minutes. His wife Anna survived and cabled him two words that still pierce the heart: "Saved alone."
Spafford had already buried a son to scarlet fever. He had lost nearly everything in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Now this. When the captain told him they were passing over the place where the ship went down, Spafford did something that defies every natural human instinct. He went to his cabin and wrote a hymn.
"When peace like a river attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll — whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, it is well, it is well with my soul."
That is not optimism. That is not denial. That is grace — the supernatural ability to stand in the wreckage of everything you loved and still declare that the Almighty holds you. Spafford did not write those words because his circumstances were well. He wrote them because his soul was held by a God whose grip does not loosen when ours does.
Grace is not the absence of the storm. Grace is the song that rises from the middle of it. And when we cannot find the melody on our own, the Holy One sings it over us.
