Present from the Beginning
In 1996, a team of astronomers and engineers at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore began sketching the earliest concepts for what would become the James Webb Space Telescope. Twenty-six years passed before it launched on Christmas morning, 2021. Some of those original team members were still part of the project — people who had dreamed of this instrument before the first mirror segment was polished, before the sunshield was designed, before a single line of flight code was written.
When the first full-color images arrived in July 2022 — the Carina Nebula erupting in towers of gas, infant stars blazing to life — the engineers who had been there from the beginning didn't just nod with professional satisfaction. They gasped. They wept. They had been present at the conception of something magnificent, and watching it finally reveal what had always been hidden filled them with uncontainable delight.
Proverbs 8 paints a breathtaking portrait of Wisdom personified — present with the Almighty before the foundations of the earth, serving as "the craftsman at his side," rejoicing as the heavens were established and the seas received their boundaries. But what delighted Wisdom most was not the cosmos itself. It was humanity — "rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind."
The God who flung nebulae across the void was no distant engineer. He was a joyful Creator who, from before the beginning, took delight in you.
