Providence Guarded: Three Witnesses to Christ's Nativity
The nativity of our Lord was guarded by Divine Providence with extraordinary care. The scene required protection from popular commotion that would have hindered the gradual development of the Redeemer's ministry and its attendant evidences. Yahweh secured indubitable marks of certainty—the foundation stone laid immovably, never to be questioned.
Three sorts of hands bore witness to the truth proclaimed from heaven. First, Friends: the shepherds of Judea, whose solitary and sequestered lives fitted them to be first-called witnesses. They raised no clamour, possessed no influence, yet their simple hearts and unassuming tongues proved invaluable—a witness whose word carries the weight of truth unsuspected by artifice.
Second, Strangers: the Magi came from afar, clear of just suspicion, taking measures in concert with those soon to become opponents. Their testimony stands independent of earthly influence.
Third, Enemies: Herod himself. His relentless cruelty at Bethlehem—that mingled cowardice and murderous stratagem—lent his own polluted hand to the confirmation of prophecy. By laying traps for the Magi and slaying the innocents, he fulfilled the very word he sought to thwart. His act stands recorded both by friends and foes, a permanent seal upon the truth of Christ's coming. The holy innocents died unconscious martyrs; their blood baptized the richest blessing ever given to mankind.
