Purity of Heart: The Vision of God's Glory
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God (Matthew 5:8). This blessedness demands our attention to what purity truly means. Purity of heart implies a radical change wrought by grace—not mere absence of impurity, but the absolute authority of Elohim governing the affections, faculties, and desires of the soul. It purifies our thoughts, our worship, and our outer life.
The vision promised to the pure in heart transcends physical sight. As one perceives a beloved friend not through bodily eyes but spiritually—grasping their character and virtue—so too do the pure in heart perceive God. Christ refers to the soul's far deeper sight. The selfish cannot comprehend unselfishness any more than the blind can grasp color's glory. Only the pure in heart perceive that God is light and love.
This vision constitutes exceeding blessedness. To see God satisfies the heart's deepest longings. It clothes ordinary life in glory and awakens immortal hope. Purity of heart was Adam's by nature; it is ours by grace—a living principle, ever powerful, ever resisted, yet never defeated. It grows daily in aspirations and likeness to Christ until perfected when we shall see Him as He is and become like Him (1 John 3:2). Such persons discern God's presence in trials, prosperity, and all creation, for to them all things become pure.
