Putting Into Practice: Gossip - Teaching Material
As we reflect on Proverbs 3:5-6, which calls us to “trust in the Lord with all your heart” and to lean not on our own understanding, let us consider the nature of gossip in our lives and communities. Imagine being at a family gathering when the conversation takes a turn. A casual remark spirals into whispers behind closed doors, planting seeds of suspicion and hurt. In that moment, God is inviting us to pause, to reflect deeply. How might we do things differently?
First, let’s engage in personal reflection. Ask yourself: How often do I participate in conversations that tear others down? This week, I encourage you to take a bold step—choose one conversation where gossip could fester and instead redirect it towards encouragement. Perhaps share a story of grace you’ve experienced or ask about someone’s well-being.
Next, actively seek to transform your community. Look around—who needs a voice of support? Reach out to someone who may be the target of gossip and simply listen. Your act of kindness could be the lifeline they desperately need.
Pray fervently about your role in this. Set aside a specific time each day to ask God to open your eyes to the impact of your words.
