Rain That Washes Clean

In The Shawshank Redemption, there is a moment that has become one of cinema's most iconic images. Andy Dufresne, after crawling through five hundred yards of sewage pipe beneath the prison walls, emerges on the other side into a thunderstorm. He staggers into a creek, tears off his prison shirt, and lifts his arms to the sky as the rain pours over him. For nearly twenty years he endured wrongful imprisonment, beatings, and degradation. But in that moment, the filth is washing away. The rain is doing what no amount of effort inside those walls could accomplish — it is making him clean again.

What strikes me every time I watch that scene is that Andy does not clean himself. He simply stands there and receives it. The rain does the work. He only had to be willing to endure the long, dark crawl to get to the place where the water could reach him.

Healing works like that. The prophet Ezekiel records the Lord's promise: "I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities." God does not ask us to scrub ourselves spotless. He asks us to show up — broken, exhausted, covered in the residue of whatever we have crawled through — and stand in the rain of His grace.

The healing is His to give. Ours is simply to lift our arms and receive it.
