Reprogrammed

In 2006, Dr. Shinya Yamanaka at Kyoto University made a discovery that stunned the scientific world. He found that ordinary adult skin cells — cells that had already specialized, already settled into their fixed identity — could be reprogrammed back into stem cells. By introducing just four specific proteins, Yamanaka reversed what biologists had assumed was a permanent condition. These "induced pluripotent stem cells" could then become anything: heart tissue, nerve cells, even retinal cells capable of restoring sight. A cell everyone had written off as finished was given a completely new future.

The scientific community had long believed that once a cell differentiated, there was no going back. The story was written. The destiny was sealed. Yamanaka proved them wrong, and he won the Nobel Prize for it.

I think about that when I read the Apostle Paul's words: "If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come. The old has gone, the new is here." What God does in a human life makes Yamanaka's discovery look modest by comparison. We come to Him convinced that we are permanently defined by our worst chapters — by addiction, by betrayal, by years of running in the wrong direction. And the God of all creation says, "I am not limited by what you have become."

He does not merely improve us. He reprograms us at the deepest level, giving us a future our past never could have predicted. That is redemption.
