Room: There Is a World Outside (Revelation 21:1-4)
In the movie Room, we meet a young boy named Jack, who has spent his entire five years in a small, locked shed with his mother. For Jack, this confined space is everything; it's his universe, filled with familiar sounds, the scent of his mother’s comforting embrace, and the warmth of their shared laughter. When his mother, Ma, speaks of the world outside—of sunlit trees swaying in the breeze, children laughing in the park, and the vast sky painted in hues of orange and pink at sunset—Jack can hardly fathom it. To him, the idea of a world beyond those four walls is as foreign as a fairy tale.
But then, with a mix of fear and curiosity, Jack and Ma escape. The moment he steps outside, he is overwhelmed by a rush of sensations—the cool grass beneath his feet, the dazzling light of the sun, and the infinite expanse of the sky above him. His eyes widen in amazement, and in that moment, the reality of life beyond his shed floods over him like a wave of pure joy.
Friends, we, too, are like Jack, often confined in our own rooms—places of limitation, hurt, and despair. Revelation 21:1-4 tells us of a new heaven and a new earth, a promise that one day there will be no more tears, no more pain, and no more sorrow. Just as Jack’s emergence into the expansive world was a revelation of freedom and hope, so too will our own transformation into the fullness of God’s creation be. What we perceive as reality is merely a shadow; the true beauty of God’s kingdom awaits us, ready to embrace us in a love that is beyond our wildest imagination. Let us lean into that hope, for the best is yet to come.
