Running on a Father's Strength
In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, British sprinter Derek Redmond lined up for the 400-meter semifinal as one of the favorites. He had trained for years, overcome multiple surgeries, and poured everything into this moment. Then, halfway down the backstretch, his hamstring snapped. Redmond crumpled to the track in agony.
What happened next became one of the most replayed moments in Olympic history. Redmond pulled himself up. Weeping, he began hobbling toward the finish line. Officials rushed toward him, but before they could reach him, a large man pushed through security and onto the track. It was Jim Redmond, Derek's father. He wrapped his arm around his son's waist and whispered, "We're going to finish this together." And they did. Step by agonizing step, father and son crossed that finish line while 65,000 people rose to their feet.
The writer of Hebrews tells us to "run with perseverance the race marked out for us." But notice — the passage never promises we will run it alone. Our Heavenly Father sees every torn muscle, every collapsed dream, every moment we fall on the track of life. And He does not stay in the stands.
Perseverance is not pretending the pain does not exist. It is feeling the full weight of it and choosing the next step anyway — knowing that the God who marked out your race will walk you across the finish line. You were never meant to run alone.
