Running to the Father

In the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, British sprinter Derek Redmond lined up for the 400-meter semifinal as a medal favorite. He had trained for years, overcoming five surgeries just to reach that starting line. When the gun fired, Redmond exploded off the blocks. Then, halfway around the turn, his hamstring snapped.

He crumpled to the track, clutching his leg. Medical staff rushed toward him with a stretcher, but Redmond waved them off. He stood up. He started hopping toward the finish line, tears streaming down his face. The crowd of 65,000 fell silent.

Then a large man in a T-shirt pushed past security and onto the track. It was Jim Redmond — Derek's father. He wrapped his arm around his son's shoulder and said, "We're going to finish this together." And they did. Step by agonizing step, father and son crossed that finish line while the entire stadium rose to its feet.

That is the Gospel in a single lap. We set out to run a race we cannot finish on our own. Somewhere along the way, the injury comes — grief, addiction, betrayal, illness. We collapse under the weight of our brokenness. But our Heavenly Father does not watch from the stands. He pushes past every barrier, wraps His arm around us, and whispers, "We will finish this together."

Healing rarely means the wound never happened. It means we never walk through it alone.
