Saviours on Mount Zion: Christ's Judgment and Kingdom
The prophecy of Obadiah concerns Edom—also called the Mount of Esau or Idumea—the mountainous region south of Judaea. Yahweh pronounced ruin upon the Edomites for their cruelty toward Judah during the Babylonian captivity. When Jewish remnants were carried into exile, Edom "stood on the other side" (Obadiah 11-14), offering no aid to their kindred nation in suffering. Yet Israel's fate differed fundamentally from Esau's: though chastised and brought low, Israel would never be crushed.
The text reveals this difference through three movements. First, saviours—ultimately the great Saviour whom Simeon and Anna hailed—would ascend Mount Zion. The Maccabean princes foreshadowed Him, but Christ alone fulfills this office completely. Second, He came for judgment: to distinguish between profession and practice, between literal and spiritual Israel. His work reveals "the thoughts of many hearts" (Luke 2:35). This judgment remains incomplete in our present age—the prince of this world is judged yet not cast out; spiritual enemies persist within God's people and within our own hearts. Third, the predicted end assures us: "the kingdom shall be the Lord's." His dominion over rebel hearts, over the Gospel kingdom, and ultimately over all that rises against Him stands certain and eternal. To this end Christ was born—as Saviour ascending Zion to judge and to reign.
