Science Illustration: Engineering and Building for the Common Good
A few years ago, I had the privilege of visiting a local engineering firm that was tasked with designing a bridge meant not just to connect two towns, but to unite their communities. As I walked through the bustling office, I marveled at the blueprints scattered across tables, lines and curves forming a structure that would soon stand as a testament to human ingenuity. The engineers spoke passionately about their work, not merely as a job, but as a calling. They envisioned families crossing the bridge, children biking together, and neighbors gathering for events on either side.
They understood that their labor was more than just steel and concrete; it was about building relationships and fostering community spirit. It reminded me of John 1:1-5, where the Word, through whom all things were made, was not just a creator but a connector of lives. Just as that bridge would connect two towns, Christ connects us to one another and to our purpose in Him.
When the bridge was finally completed, the opening ceremony was filled with laughter and joy, as people from both communities came together to celebrate. In that moment, it was clear: the bridge wasn’t just a physical structure; it was a symbol of hope, a pathway to deeper relationships, and a reminder that we are called to build, not just for ourselves, but for the common good. In our spiritual journey, may we also be bridge-builders, creating connections that echo the light and life of Christ, enriching our communities with His love.
