Science Illustration: Engineering and Building for the Common Good
As I stood beneath the towering blueprints of a new community center being built in our neighborhood, I marveled at the intricate design laid out before me. Engineers, architects, and volunteers worked tirelessly, each person contributing their unique skill set for a common purpose. While they were focused on frames and foundations, I couldn’t help but think about the deeper connections at play—how this building would serve as a refuge, a gathering place, a space for growth in faith and community.
The author of Hebrews writes, “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see” (Hebrews 11:1). This place, although just a skeleton now, represents a hope we can’t yet see but trust will flourish. Just like those engineers who measure and plan, we too must cultivate a vision for our lives grounded in faith. Each hammer strike is a reminder that progress is made one step at a time, often unseen, yet profoundly impactful.
When completed, this center will become a haven for healing, learning, and spiritual growth, echoing the very act of creation described in Hebrews 11:3, where the universe was formed at God’s command. It is a testament to what can happen when we trust in the unseen and come together as a community. We are called to engineer our lives with intention and purpose, grounded in faith, that reaches beyond ourselves for the common good. What might we build together if we leaned into that faith?
