Seeds That Open Only in Fire

In the forests of the American West, the lodgepole pine has developed a remarkable survival strategy. Its cones are sealed shut with a thick resin that no ordinary warmth can melt. The seeds inside remain locked away — sometimes for decades — waiting. They do not open in gentle spring rain. They do not open in summer heat. They open only in fire.

When wildfire sweeps through and temperatures reach 113 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit, the resin finally melts and the cones release their seeds onto freshly cleared, nutrient-rich soil. Botanists call these "serotinous" cones — from the Latin serotinus, meaning "late-coming." The very catastrophe that destroys the old forest is what births the new one.

There is a kind of courage in that. Not the courage that avoids the fire, but the courage that trusts what God has sealed within you will be released through it.

When Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego walked into the furnace, they did not walk out diminished. They walked out unbound. The fire burned away only their chains.

Some of you are in the fire right now, and you are afraid that everything is ending. But the Almighty who designed a pine cone to need the flame has also designed your faith to flourish in the furnace. What feels like destruction may be the very thing that sets your calling free.
