Seeds That Refused to Die

In 2005, Dr. Sarah Sallon and Dr. Elaine Solowey did something that seemed impossible. They took a date palm seed excavated from the ruins of Masada — the ancient fortress where Jewish rebels made their last stand against Rome — and planted it. The seed had been sitting in a drawer for forty years after archaeologists unearthed it. Radiocarbon dating confirmed it was roughly two thousand years old.

No one expected it to grow. A seed that old should have been nothing more than a relic, a curiosity sealed behind museum glass. But weeks after planting, a green shoot broke through the soil. They named the seedling Methuselah, and it grew into a healthy tree.
