Shaped for One Lock

In 1894, German chemist Emil Fischer proposed one of biology's most elegant ideas: the "lock and key" model of enzyme function. Each enzyme in your body is shaped with extraordinary precision to fit exactly one specific molecule — like a key cut for a single lock. Out of the thousands of chemical reactions happening inside you at this moment, each enzyme knows its one assignment and pursues it with unerring faithfulness.

Not one of your enzymes suffers an identity crisis. A digestive enzyme never tries to become a brain enzyme. It doesn't compare itself to the enzymes powering your immune system. It simply does what it was shaped to do — and because it does, you stay alive.

The Apostle Paul wrote, "We are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do" (Ephesians 2:10). That word "handiwork" — in the Greek, poiema — is where we get the English word "poem." You are not a random collection of talents and scattered experiences. You are a composition, shaped by the Almighty with the same specificity He built into every enzyme in your body.

You were not made to fit every lock. You were made to fit yours. And somewhere in this world, there is a door that only your God-given purpose can open.
