Show Don't Tell: Genesis 13:1-18

Imagine a sun-drenched afternoon in the ancient land of Canaan, where the air is thick with the scent of dust and the distant echo of bleating sheep. The vast plains are alive with the shouts of Abram’s herdsmen, their voices rising in a clamorous debate, each one defending the interests of their flocks. The fields, once abundant, now feel cramped and weary, the wells running low as conflict brews over resources. This isn’t just a family squabble; it’s a clash of blessings that’s threatening to tear apart the very fabric of their relationship.

In the midst of this turmoil stands Abram, the elder, a figure of grace and wisdom. His heart, heavy yet hopeful, beats with the conviction that God’s provision is boundless. He turns to Lot, his kin, and offers him the first choice, a gesture of startling generosity. “Look around you,” Abram says, his voice steady. Lot gazes up, eyes widening as he surveys the landscape before him. The Jordan Valley stretches out, lush and inviting. It sparkles under the sun, reminiscent of the gardens of Eden, yet it bears a striking resemblance to the riches of Egypt.

This is a moment pregnant with potential. But instead of choosing the path of faith, Lot lets his eyes deceive him. He pitches his tent toward the glittering allure of Sodom, not realizing that he is edging closer to a world that will ultimately draw him away from God.

Then, as Lot departs, the air shifts. God speaks to Abram: “Lift up your eyes... all this land I will give to you.” Abram, filled with renewed spirit, takes a step forward, experiencing the promise in every direction. He builds an altar in Hebron, a sacred monument of faith. Meanwhile, Lot, enamored with the city lights, moves further from the divine blessing. Two men, two choices, two destinies—a poignant reminder that the path we choose shapes not only our lives but echoes through generations.
