Show Don't Tell: Genesis 14:1-24
Imagine the air thick with tension in the Valley of Siddim, a place once alive with the laughter of children and the hum of daily life, now transformed into a battlefield. The war horns blare ominously, reverberating off the craggy hills as four powerful kings, sleek and relentless, clash against five desperate city-states. Dust rises like a storm as armies collide, swords flashing in the fading sunlight. Amidst the chaos, the cries of the fallen echo—Sodom and Gomorrah are falling, and with them, Lot—the nephew drawn in by the allure of the lush, green plains. Now, he finds himself shackled and dragged away, all that he loves stripped from him.
In the quiet of his camp, word reaches Abram, the shepherd who has tended flocks and watched stars. But today, the calm is shattered. Rising to the call of family, he transforms before our eyes—no longer just a nomad but a fierce protector. With 318 loyal men, trained from childhood to follow him, they slip into the night like shadows, hearts pounding with purpose. The moon casts a silver glow as they launch a surprise attack, the clash of steel and the shouts of victory marking the air. In a whirlwind of courage, they reclaim Lot and his possessions, but the story doesn’t end there.
As the dust settles, a figure emerges from the shadows—Melchizedek, king of Salem, draped in robes of deep purple, radiating a calm authority. He approaches with bread and wine, a sacred offering amid the ruins of battle. “Blessed be Abram by God Most High,” he declares, a priest without lineage, his presence a whisper of divine promise. Abram, overwhelmed, gives a tenth of all he possesses—a gesture of gratitude to something greater than victory.
Later, when the king of Sodom offers riches, Abram stands resolute, “I will accept nothing belonging to you.” In that moment, we see a man who knows that true wealth is not found in possessions but in obedience to God’s call. Abram chooses integrity over gain, an echo of the heart that seeks the eternal amidst the transient.
