Show Don't Tell: Genesis 15:1-21
As night drapes its velvet cloak over the landscape, we find ourselves alongside a weary Abram, the weight of years pressing heavily on his shoulders. The stars twinkle above, but in his heart, doubt looms larger than the vastness of the sky. "What can you give me since I remain childless?" he whispers into the darkness, his voice barely audible above the rustling leaves.
Picture the ancient stillness surrounding him, the cool night air filled with the scent of dry earth and distant olive trees. It’s here, in this moment of vulnerability, that God beckons him outside, away from the confines of his tent, away from the limitations of his reality. “Look up at the sky,” God commands, “and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.”
Abram tilts his head back, and as his eyes adjust to the brilliance above, he feels the weight of eternity in those countless points of light. Each star, a promise, shimmering against the backdrop of his fears—“So shall your offspring be.” In that breathtaking instant, under the vast expanse of God’s creation, belief ignites within him, a flicker of hope that pierces through the darkness.
But the night is not yet done with Abram. As he prepares for a covenant ceremony, tension fills the air. Animals are split in half, their lifeless bodies laying cold on the ground, blood pooling beneath them. A deep sleep envelops Abram, and an overwhelming dread settles over him like a thick fog. Then, in a moment that defies understanding, a smoking firepot and a blazing torch—symbols of God’s presence—pass between the severed pieces. Here, God alone walks the covenant path, solemnly taking upon Himself the curse of breaking it, promising that the weight of this commitment rests solely on His shoulders.
