Show Don't Tell: Genesis 28:10-22
As night drapes its dark cloak over the rugged hills, Jacob finds himself alone, the chill seeping into his bones. He’s fled from home, the echoes of conflict still ringing in his ears—his brother Esau's anger a haunting specter. With a solitary rock serving as his pillow, he stretches out on the cold ground, the rough surface digging into his back. Stars twinkle mockingly in the vast sky above, offering no solace.
But then, in the depths of his weariness, a dream unfurls. In the stillness, a vision bursts into life: a magnificent stairway reaching from the dust of the earth to the very gates of heaven. He watches, wide-eyed, as angels glide up and down, their wings whispering secrets of divine purpose. At the top stands the LORD, radiant with glory, His voice echoing through the night air: “I am the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac.” Each word is like a balm to Jacob’s troubled spirit, a promise cascading down like a gentle rain. “I am with you, Jacob. I will not leave you until I have done what I promised.”
Jacob jolts awake, heart racing, eyes wide with wonder and fear. “Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware of it!” he exclaims, voice trembling. The weight of his solitude lifts as he realizes he is known, seen, and embraced by grace. In a fervor, he takes that rough stone, his humble pillow, and sets it upright as a pillar—anointed with oil, a sacred marker. He names it Bethel, “house of God.” There, in the darkness, the deceiver has met grace, and the journey of transformation begins.
