Show Don't Tell: Genesis 9:1-17
As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant hues of orange and gold, the air was thick with the scent of fresh earth, still saturated from the recent rains. Noah stood at the edge of a vibrant meadow, the remnants of the great flood whispering through the gentle rustle of leaves. The world felt reborn, yet there was a heaviness in the air—a weight of grief and loss. God had blessed him here, just as He had with Adam long ago: “Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth.” But in this new world, something fundamental had shifted. The animals that once roamed freely would now carry a flicker of fear in their eyes when they saw humankind approach. Meat was permitted; new rules governed this fragile order.
And then came the covenant—an unearned promise, a gift of grace. “Never again will all life be destroyed by flood.” The words rang out with an echo of divine assurance, a lifeline extended amidst a world still damp with judgment.
Suddenly, the sky shifted. As Noah gazed upward, a miracle unfolded before his eyes: God’s rainbow arched across the sky, a breathtaking tapestry woven from colors Noah had never known—vivid greens and blues, fiery reds and soft purples, all bending through droplets of rain like light refracting through crystal. It was as if heaven itself reached down to touch the earth, a bridge reminding Noah of God’s steadfast love.
Every time the storm clouds gathered, every time the rain began to fall, Noah would lift his gaze, remembering this promise. He would see the bow, vibrant against the gray, aimed deliberately towards heaven—as if to say, “Look up, for I am watching over you.” In that moment, the weight of God’s faithfulness would lift his spirit, and he would know, without a doubt, that the Creator’s love was unconditional, steadfast, and ever-present.
