Show Don't Tell: John 13:1-17
Instead of saying "Jesus washed the disciples' feet," feel the water and towel. It is just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knows that the hour has come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who are in the world, he loves them to the end. The evening meal is in progress, and the devil has already prompted Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knows that the Father has put all things under his power, and that he has come from God and is returning to God; so—knowing all this—he gets up from the meal, takes off his outer clothing, and wraps a towel around his waist. He pours water into a basin and begins to wash his disciples' feet, drying them with the towel. The Creator of the universe kneeling with a basin. When he comes to Simon Peter: "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" "You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand." "No, you shall never wash my feet." "Unless I wash you, you have no part with me." "Then, Lord, not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!" "Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you." He knows who will betray him. After washing their feet: "Do you understand what I have done for you?... Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet."
