Show Don't Tell: John 1:35-42
Instead of saying "Jesus called his first disciples," hear the first question. The next day John is there again with two of his disciples. When he sees Jesus passing by, he says: "Look, the Lamb of God!" The two disciples hear him say this and follow Jesus. Turning around, Jesus sees them following and asks: "What do you want?" Not "Who are you?" but "What do you want?"—the first words Jesus speaks in John's Gospel. "Rabbi, where are you staying?" "Come and you will see." They go and see where he is staying, and they spend the day with him. It is about four in the afternoon. Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, is one of the two. The first thing Andrew does is find his brother Simon: "We have found the Messiah." He brings Simon to Jesus. Jesus looks at him: "You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas"—which means Peter, Rock. A new name. A new identity. A new future.
