Show Don't Tell: John 1:9-13
Imagine a renowned artist, let's call him Samuel, who has spent years pouring his soul into a breathtaking collection. Each piece reflects the depths of his heart, a vibrant tapestry of color and emotion. After years of struggle and sacrifice, the day finally arrives for his exhibition. As he steps into the gallery, excitement thrums through him. Yet, to his astonishment, the crowd mingles without recognizing the genius standing among them. They admire the paintings but overlook the artist himself, discussing the works as if they were mere commodities, divorced from the life and love that birthed them.
Now, picture Samuel walking through the exhibit, his heart heavy with a bittersweet blend of hope and sorrow. He overhears a group of art critics dissecting his painting titled The Dawn of Light, marveling at its brilliance. But he longs for someone to see not just the work, but the soul behind it.
As he approaches the canvas, a child’s laughter pierces the air. A little girl, hand in hand with her mother, stands transfixed, her wide eyes sparkling with wonder. “Mom, look! It’s like the sun is smiling!” In that moment, Samuel’s heart swells. She sees him, and he sees her—a connection sparked by pure delight.
Just as Samuel's heart yearns for recognition, so too did Jesus, the Logos, the true light coming into a world that often remains in darkness. He entered his own creation, longing for acknowledgment, but his own people turned away. Yet to those who embraced him, who could see beyond the surface to the divine light within, he extended the most profound invitation of all: to become children of God—a family not defined by blood or lineage, but by a sacred rebirth into hope and love. In that exchange, the Artist and the child become one, illuminating the profound truth that even in rejection, there is an invitation to belong.
