Show Don't Tell: John 19:38-42
Vivid sensory description for preaching John 19:38-42
This is a show dont tell prompt on burial of jesus and joseph of arimathea. It carries an emotional tone of awe, grief and hope.
Instead of saying "Joseph and Nicodemus buried Jesus," smell the spices. Later, Joseph of Arimathea asks Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph is a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he fears the Jewish leaders. With Pilate's permission, he comes and takes the body away. He is accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier has visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brings a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. Seventy-five pounds—a royal burial quantity. Taking Jesus' body, the two of them wrap it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This is in accordance with Jewish burial customs. At the place where Jesus is crucified, there is a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one has ever been laid. Because it is the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb is nearby, they lay Jesus there. The secret disciples come out of hiding. The one who came by night now buries Jesus as the evening comes.
