This is a show dont tell prompt on homiletics and preaching technique for adults.
As the sun dipped low in the sky, casting golden hues across the dusty paths of Sychar, a woman approached the well, her water jar resting comfortably on her hip. Her name was Miriam, and she came to draw water, as she had done countless times before. The harsh whisper of the midday sun had kept most away, but she was used to the isolation, the burden of shame that followed her. Little did she know that this day would change everything.
As Miriam drew near, she noticed a man seated by the well—a rabbi, a teacher, though his clothes were weathered and dusty. Jesus. Her heart quickened; she had heard tales of this man from afar, a healer, a prophet. Yet, here he was, breaking all norms by speaking to her, a woman of questionable reputation.
The air was thick with a tension that vibrated like a taut string, but instead of disdain, his words flowed with compassion. “Give me a drink,” he said, his voice gentle yet commanding. They talked, weaving through the tangled stories of her life, revealing secrets she had buried deep. In that moment, Miriam felt seen, truly seen.
Then, as quickly as it began, the conversation shifted. The disciples returned, their footsteps crunching on the gravel, eyes wide with astonishment. They were startled to see him conversing with her, this woman whom society deemed unworthy. Yet, instead of questioning him directly, they stood in silence, grappling with their own biases.
