Show Don't Tell: John 9:35-41
Imagine the dusty streets of Jerusalem, where the sun casts long shadows and the air hums with the murmur of daily life. Among the bustling throng is a man named Eli, who has spent his entire existence navigating the world without sight. He knows the familiar sound of the marketplace, the laughter of children, and the whispers of the Pharisees, but the faces of those around him are mere silhouettes in his mind. One fateful day, everything changes. Jesus, the miracle worker, heals him with a simple command, and suddenly, color and form burst into Eli’s vision like a vibrant sunrise.
Yet, in the midst of this miracle, Eli faces rejection from his community. The very people who once ignored him now cast him out, doubting the authenticity of his newfound sight. Desperation mingles with hope as he wanders, grappling with his identity, when suddenly, Jesus finds him.
“Do you believe in the Son of Man?” Jesus asks, his voice a blend of authority and compassion. “Who is he, sir? Tell me so that I may believe in him,” Eli responds, his heart pounding with anticipation. Jesus reveals, “You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.” In that moment, Eli's heart swells. “Lord, I believe,” he cries, sinking to his knees in worship, tears streaming down his face—a mixture of joy and relief washing over him.
Nearby, the Pharisees overhear this exchange. Confusion grips them as they question, “What? Are we blind too?” Jesus’s reply pierces through the air like a sharp sword: “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains.”
