Show Don't Tell: Luke 13:18-21
On a sun-drenched afternoon in a small garden, a young boy named Samuel knelt in the earth, cradling a tiny mustard seed between his fingers. To his innocent eyes, it seemed almost insignificant—just a speck of brown nestled in the palm of his hand. Yet, with every careful planting, he imagined the future: a towering tree, its branches reaching toward the heavens, a sanctuary for the sparrows that flitted through the air.
As weeks passed, Samuel tended to his garden, watering and nurturing the soil, delighting in the anticipation that pulsed within him. The seed, buried beneath layers of earth, was invisible to the world, but unseen forces—the warmth of the sun, the gentle kiss of rain—were at work. In time, a tender shoot emerged, stretching skyward, and with it, hope blossomed anew. Birds began to visit, finding refuge in its budding branches, and Samuel’s heart swelled with joy, for he had witnessed a miracle unfold.
Then, in the same kitchen where his mother baked warm bread, Samuel observed her kneading a hefty mound of dough. With deft hands, she sprinkled in the yeast, a mere whisper of its power, and as she worked, the flour transformed. What seemed like a lump of lifeless dough began to rise, expanding beyond its original form. Just hours later, the warm aroma of freshly baked bread filled the house, inviting all to savor the feast.
Both the mustard seed and the yeast remind us of the kingdom of God: small beginnings that lead to extraordinary ends. In our lives, as we cultivate our faith—even when it feels inconsequential—God is working, crafting something magnificent right beneath the surface. When we trust in His timing, the tiniest seeds can sprout into mighty trees, and the smallest acts of faith can influence the world in ways we can scarcely imagine.
