Show Don't Tell: Luke 15:8-10
Imagine the dim light of dawn spilling through the small window of Miriam’s modest home in ancient Galilee. The dirt floor, uneven and crumbling, tells the story of countless footsteps, but today it holds a secret. Miriam, a woman of quiet resilience, has just tipped her last silver coin from her palm and watched it roll away. She had ten—her life savings—but now, one is lost among the shadows.
With a deep breath, she lights a small oil lamp, the flickering flame casting long shadows on the walls. The sweet scent of burning oil mingles with the earthy aroma of the ground beneath her feet. Every drop of that precious oil is a sacrifice; she knows it could buy bread for her family. Yet, the weight of that lost coin presses heavily on her heart. She begins to sweep, the rough bristles of the broom scraping against the floor, stirring up dust and memories. Each corner, each crack becomes a potential hiding place. She moves with urgency, the rhythm of her sweeping echoing her desperation.
Hours pass, and just when fatigue threatens to claim her, there it is—gleaming just beneath a loose stone! With a cry of joy that breaks the stillness, she lifts the coin high, its silver glinting as if rejoicing with her. Miriam rushes to her neighbors, breathless with excitement, calling them to celebrate. "Rejoice with me! I have found my lost coin!"
And just like that, heaven erupts in celebration. The angels lean in, their joy contagious, for in the eyes of God, even one lost soul is worth the relentless search and the extravagant party that follows. One coin matters that much. One sinner matters that much. Can we fathom that love?
