Show Don't Tell: Luke 18:31-34

As Jesus gathered the Twelve, the air was thick with anticipation. They were on the dusty road to Jerusalem, each step echoing the weight of what lay ahead. He pulled them aside, a rare solemnity filling his voice. “We are going up to Jerusalem,” he began, his eyes scanning the horizon, “and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled.”

A hush fell over them, the kind of silence that dances in the air before a storm. “He will be delivered over to the Gentiles. They will mock him, insult him, and spit on him; they will flog him and kill him. On the third day, he will rise again.” His words were clear—like a bell ringing in the stillness—yet they landed like stones thrown into a pond, creating ripples of confusion.

Thomas, always the pragmatist, furrowed his brow, struggling to reconcile these ominous predictions with the Jesus he knew—the teacher, the healer, the friend. The others exchanged bewildered glances, their minds racing but their hearts heavy. “The disciples did not understand any of this,” Luke tells us, underscoring the profound disconnect.

Imagine their bewilderment, standing at the crossroads of faith and fear, hearing the hardest truths yet unable to grasp their weight. They were hearing the words of life, yet they felt as if they were in a fog—lost in a thick mist where the sun seemed to hide. The cross loomed in the distance, an unimaginable reality they could not yet comprehend, a dark shadow cast upon the bright hope that had once filled their hearts. Sometimes, even the clearest words remain lost, waiting for the revelation that comes only through experience, grace, and time.
