Show Don't Tell: Luke 20:20-26

In the bustling heart of Jerusalem, the sun cast shimmering reflections off the polished surfaces of coins as vendors shouted over the din of the market. Amidst this vibrant chaos, a group of religious leaders huddled together, eyes narrowed and hearts scheming. They had watched Jesus closely, and now, they sent out spies, cloaked in the guise of sincerity, to trap Him in a moment of weakness.

“Teacher,” one of them began, a smoothness in his voice that belied the tension crackling in the air, “we know you teach the truth without fear or favor. Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?” The crowd held its breath, aware that this question was laden with political treachery.

Jesus, with a calmness that seemed to quiet even the murmurs of the crowd, asked for a denarius. The coin was cool and heavy in His hand, its surface marked with the face of Caesar, a stark reminder of Roman authority. “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” He inquired, His gaze piercing through the façade of the questioners.

“Caesar’s,” they replied, their confidence faltering as they sensed the shift in the atmosphere. With a gentle yet firm response, Jesus declared, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
