Show Don't Tell: Luke 5:17-26
Instead of saying "Jesus healed a paralytic and forgave his sins," watch the tiles come down. One day Jesus is teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law are sitting there—they have come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. The power of the Lord is with Jesus to heal. Some men come carrying a paralyzed man on a mat. They try to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus. When they cannot find a way to do this because of the crowd, they go up on the roof and lower him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus. When Jesus sees their faith, he says: "Friend, your sins are forgiven." The Pharisees and teachers begin thinking: "Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?" Jesus knows what they are thinking. "Which is easier: to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up and walk'? But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins." To the paralyzed man: "I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home." Immediately he stands up, takes what he was lying on, and goes home praising God. Everyone is amazed and gives praise to God. They are filled with awe: "We have seen remarkable things today."
