Show Don't Tell: Luke 8:1-3
Imagine a dusty road winding through the hills of Galilee, where the sun hangs low, casting golden rays across the landscape. As Jesus moves from one village to the next, a vibrant crowd gathers, drawn by His words—a symphony of healing and hope. Among the throngs of people, we find a remarkable group of women, often overlooked yet crucial to the very fabric of Jesus' ministry.
There’s Mary, known as Magdalene, her eyes sparkling with the light of freedom after having been released from the grip of seven demons. She walks with a new purpose, her heart swelling with gratitude and determination. Beside her strides Joanna, the wife of Chuza, a man who manages the affairs of Herod’s household. With her finely woven garments that speak of her former life of privilege, Joanna now exchanges wealth for a deeper calling, investing her resources to support this itinerant preacher. And then there’s Susanna, whose laughter rings like chimes in the wind, a woman whose own story of healing and redemption propels her to serve alongside these powerful figures.
Together, they embody an unexpected alliance—each woman carrying her own past, yet united in purpose. Their hands are not idle; they provide for Jesus and His disciples out of their own means, scattering seeds of generosity that would flourish into a movement. Luke captures this truth with such tender care, acknowledging that while the Twelve are often named, these women are the quiet but unstoppable force behind the scenes.
Their stories remind us of an essential truth: the kingdom of God often advances through the courage and conviction of those society may overlook. In their giving and their following, they transform the narrative, reminding us that often, the most powerful donors are those who have tasted grace and are willing to share it.
