Show Don't Tell: Luke 8:16-18
In a small village, nestled between rolling hills, there lived an elderly woman named Miriam. Every evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, she would light a small oil lamp in her cozy kitchen. The flickering flame danced joyfully, casting warm shadows that chased away the darkness. One evening, as she lit her lamp, she paused to reflect on the words of Jesus: “No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed.”
With a gentle smile, she picked up the lamp and placed it on a sturdy wooden table in the center of her home, allowing its warm glow to spill out into the room. Neighbors passing by could see the light spilling from her windows, a beacon of hope in the gathering gloom.
But one night, a storm swept through the village. Thunder rumbled, and rain lashed against the windows. Fear crept into Miriam’s heart as she watched the shadows grow longer. In that moment, she recalled Jesus’s words: “For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed.” With renewed courage, she opened her door, inviting her neighbors inside. “Come! Let us share this light together!” she called.
As they gathered around the lamp, the flickering glow transformed their fear into warmth and laughter. They shared stories of hope and resilience, each person’s voice lifting the other like a prayer. “Consider carefully how you listen,” Miriam reminded them, her eyes bright with conviction. “If we don’t let our light shine, we risk losing even the warmth we think we have.”
