Show Don't Tell: Luke 8:22-25

Imagine the scene: a small fishing boat bobbing gently on the surface of the Sea of Galilee, its wooden planks creaking softly beneath the weight of weary fishermen. The sun hangs low on the horizon, bathing the water in golden hues as the disciples, seasoned sailors, feel a sense of peace in their momentary escape from the demands of the crowds. Yet, as the boat glides over the waters, Jesus, exhausted from the weight of his ministry, reclines against a cushion, gently snoring, oblivious to the world around him.

Suddenly, the tranquility shatters. Dark clouds roll in like a heavy curtain, swirling with ominous intent. The winds howl, sending waves crashing against the sides of the boat. Water splashes over the gunwales, soaking the disciples as panic ignites in their hearts. They scramble to keep the vessel afloat, voices raised in frantic cries. The storm rages, a fierce squall that threatens to swallow them whole. "Master! Master! We're going to drown!" they shout, their voices trembling against the backdrop of roaring winds.

And then, with a calmness that seems otherworldly, Jesus rises. He steps to the edge of the boat and faces the tempest, his eyes steady and resolute. "Peace! Be still!" he commands, and in that pivotal moment, the chaos is silenced. The wind drops, the waves shrink back, and a profound stillness settles over the waters, as if the very elements recognize their Creator.

“Where is your faith?” he queries gently, his voice piercing through the awe that envelops them. In that breathless moment, the disciples exchange wide-eyed glances, whispering, “Who is this? Even the winds and the waters obey him.” In the midst of their fear, they encounter the One who embodies peace itself, reminding us that no storm is too great for the One who holds all creation in his hands.
