In a dusty corner of Capernaum, sunlight streamed through the unshuttered windows of a modest home where Jesus and his disciples had gathered. The air was thick with the scent of freshly baked bread and the soft murmur of conversation. But soon, the atmosphere shifted. Voices began to rise as the disciples, caught in a competitive frenzy, argued over who among them would claim the title of the greatest. Each one jockeyed for position, puffing their chests out like peacocks, their voices tinged with pride and ambition.
Then, with a wisdom that transcended the noise of their quarrel, Jesus calmly surveyed the scene. He didn’t scold them; instead, he reached out and called a small child named Samuel, who had been playing quietly in the corner, unaware of the heated debate. Samuel, with his tousled hair and big, innocent eyes, approached Jesus, clutching a worn wooden toy. The room fell silent, the disciples frozen, their eyes shifting between the child and their rabbi.
Jesus knelt down, placing his gentle hands on Samuel’s shoulders. “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me,” he said, his voice tender yet firm. “And whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest.”
Samuel, small and vulnerable, embodied a profound truth that day. As Jesus looked around the room, he saw the disciples’ faces soften, the tension dissipating like morning mist under the sun. Then John, his brow furrowed with concern, interjected. “Master, we saw someone driving out demons in your name and tried to stop him because he is not one of us.”
