Show Don't Tell: Luke 9:57-62
As the sun dipped low on the horizon, casting a golden glow over the dusty road, a crowd formed around Jesus, eager to hear His words. Among them was a man named Eli, his heart pounding with excitement. "Teacher," he declared, "I will follow you wherever you go!"
Jesus paused, looking into Eli’s eyes, and replied with a voice that echoed with truth, "Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head." In that moment, the warmth of the day felt like a weight on Eli’s shoulders; the cost of discipleship painted a stark picture of uncertainty.
Just then, a woman named Miriam, with tears glistening in her eyes, approached. "Lord, let me first bury my father," she pleaded, her voice trembling with grief and obligation. Jesus, with a gentle yet unyielding gaze, responded, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God." The air hung heavy with the tension of her familial duty—duty that suddenly seemed to pale in comparison to the call to a greater mission.
Then, a younger man named Jonah hesitated, clutching his family’s heirloom pendant. "I'll follow you, Lord! But first, let me say goodbye to my family." Jesus turned to him, His voice firm yet compassionate, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.” Jonah felt the sting of reality; the plow required total focus, and there was no room for hesitation.
