Show Don't Tell: Mark 10:17-27
Instead of saying "Jesus challenged a rich man," watch the encounter unfold. As Jesus is starting on his way, a man runs up to him and falls on his knees: "Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" Jesus probes: "Why do you call me good? No one is good—except God alone." Then the commandments: don't murder, commit adultery, steal, give false testimony, defraud; honor your father and mother. "Teacher, all these I have kept since I was a boy." Jesus looks at him and loves him. Mark alone notes this—love before the hard word. "One thing you lack. Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me." At this the man's face falls. He goes away sad, because he has great wealth. Jesus looks around: "How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!" The disciples are amazed. "Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God." They're even more amazed: "Who then can be saved?" Jesus looks at them: "With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God."
