Show Don't Tell: Mark 10:32-34
As Jesus and his disciples journeyed toward Jerusalem, the dusty road beneath their feet felt heavier with each step. The sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows that intertwined with their anxious hearts. Among the throngs of pilgrims making their way to the Passover festival, Jesus led with an unwavering resolve that both astonished and frightened his followers. The air buzzed with a strange tension, like the charged silence before a storm.
Peter, always the impetuous one, stole glances at Jesus, his brow furrowed in confusion. The whispers of upcoming danger seemed to swirl around them like the dust motes dancing in the late afternoon light. The disciples exchanged anxious looks, their hearts racing, sensing that something monumental loomed just ahead. And then, taking a breath that seemed to echo in the stillness, Jesus pulled the Twelve aside.
His voice, steady yet filled with a grave urgency, began to unravel a chilling prophecy: “We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and hand him over to the Gentiles, who will mock him, spit on him, flog him, and kill him. Three days later he will rise.”
Each word felt like a hammer striking a nail, driving the truth deeper into their hearts. The vivid imagery he painted—of betrayal, mocking crowds, and brutal execution—clashed with their hopes for a victorious Messiah. Yet, there he stood, resolute, his gaze fixed on the distant city, knowing exactly what awaited him. In that moment, they glimpsed the depth of his love: he was not just heading to his fate; he was marching toward their salvation. And still, he chose to lead the way, undeterred by fear, illuminated by purpose.
