Show Don't Tell: Mark 1:14-20

The sun hung low over the Sea of Galilee, casting a warm golden glow that danced on the water's surface, a shimmering invitation to the day’s work. The salty tang of the lake filled the air as Simon and his brother Andrew stood knee-deep in the shallows, their hands rhythmically casting nets into the depths. Each throw was a dance of hope, a search for sustenance, a daily battle against uncertainty. The soft lapping of waves and the distant calls of seagulls mingled with their laughter, a sound both familiar and comforting.

But then, into this tranquil scene stepped Jesus, a figure both radiant and authoritative. His presence rippled through the air like a gentle breeze, stirring something deep within. “Come, follow me,” He called, His voice breaking through the everyday like a trumpet sound announcing a new dawn. “And I will send you out to fish for people.”

In that moment, the world around them faded; the nets, heavy with the weight of expectation, slipped from their fingers. With a heartbeat of resolve, they abandoned their boats and their father, Zebedee, who stood stunned, the life they had known dissipating like mist.

A little further along the shore, James and John were mending their nets, the rough fibers digging into their palms. Jesus beckoned, and without hesitation, they too left everything—home, family, security—at the sound of His call. There was no deliberation, no weighing of the cost; the kingdom of God was at hand, demanding a response that was immediate, radical, and transformative.
