Show Don't Tell: Mark 2:18-22
Imagine a sun-drenched village nestled among rolling hills of Galilee, where the air is thick with the sweet scent of fig trees and the distant laughter of children playing by the river. It's a time of celebration, and at the heart of this village is a wedding feast, vibrant and alive. Tables are laden with fragrant bread, roasted lamb, and bowls of fresh olives, while musicians strum joyful melodies on their lyres, inviting everyone to dance and rejoice.
In stark contrast, just outside the festivities, we find John the Baptist’s disciples and the Pharisees huddled together, their faces drawn and weary. They are fasting, their spirits heavy with solemnity, questioning the very essence of devotion. “Why do the disciples of John and the Pharisees fast, but yours do not?” they ask Jesus, their voices tinged with confusion and frustration.
With a twinkle in His eye, Jesus responds not with doctrine but with the joy of the moment. “How can the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them?” It's as if He is painting a picture with words, inviting them to join the celebration instead of holding onto their rigid traditions.
He continues with two vivid images. Picture an old garment, frayed and faded, where a new patch is mistakenly sewn. As it shrinks, it pulls and rips the fabric further, leaving a gaping hole. Then imagine the brittle wineskins, worn and cracked, bursting under the pressure of new wine, spilling precious liquid onto the ground. “No! New wine requires new wineskins,” He declares, revealing the heart of His message.
