Show Don't Tell: Mark 4:30-34
Imagine standing in a sun-dappled garden, the gentle hum of bees buzzing around, the scent of earth—rich and alive—filling the air. In your hand, you hold a single mustard seed, tiny and unassuming, almost lost between your thumb and forefinger. It’s so small that you can barely see it without squinting. And yet, as you look at this minuscule seed, you can’t help but remember Jesus’ words: “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like? What parable shall we use to describe it? It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth.”
You take a moment, drawing in the sweet scent of the soil around you, and envision what happens next. You plant that seed into the warm embrace of the ground, unsure of the transformation that will unfold. Days turn into weeks, and you watch in awe as it pushes through the soil, a tender green sprout reaching for the sky.
Soon, it grows into a sprawling bush, its branches stretching wide, a sanctuary for chirping birds and fluttering butterflies. You can almost hear their songs of joy as they find refuge in its shade. This humble beginning reminds you of how the kingdom of God unfolds—starting with twelve unlikely disciples, a crucified and risen Messiah, and a movement that not only transforms lives but reshapes entire communities.
Just as Jesus spoke in parables, inviting people to lean in and listen, so too does He call us to embrace the small beginnings of our faith, knowing they can shelter many more than we dare to imagine. In this kingdom, what seems insignificant can lead to a canopy of grace that offers refuge to all.
