Show Don't Tell: Mark 7:31-37

Imagine the sun dipping low over the shimmering waters of the Sea of Galilee, casting a golden hue across the bustling marketplace of the Decapolis. The air is thick with the scent of spices and the distant laughter of children playing by the shore. Among the throngs of people, a group huddles close, their faces etched with desperation. They carry a man named Eli, who has known silence for far too long; his ears have never heard the rustle of leaves nor the laughter of his friends, and his tongue has never formed the words to express his heart.

With hopeful eyes, they approach Jesus, their faith palpable. “Please,” they plead, “just place your hand on him.” But Jesus, ever the compassionate healer, takes Eli aside, away from the prying eyes and the noise of the crowd. In this intimate moment, he leans down, and with a tenderness that transcends words, he puts his fingers into Eli’s ears—a gesture both personal and profound. Then, to everyone’s astonishment, he spits and touches Eli’s tongue.

Looking up to the heavens, Jesus exhales a deep sigh, a sound that carries the weight of humanity’s longing, and then proclaims, “Ephphatha!”—“Be opened!”

In that instant, a miraculous transformation occurs. Eli’s ears pop open as if awakening from a deep slumber, and his tongue loosens, releasing a flood of words that had been trapped within him for years. He speaks plainly, joy bursting forth like the colors of a sunrise. The crowd gasps, their amazement spilling over as they rush to share the good news. “He has done everything well,” they exclaim, echoing the ancient prophecy of Isaiah—the deaf shall hear, and the mute shall sing for joy. In that moment, the air is electric with hope, and Eli’s newfound voice becomes a testament to the healing power of Christ.
