Show Don't Tell: Matthew 10:34-39

As we gather today, let’s listen closely to the words of Jesus, a call that echoes not as a whisper but as a clarion call, sharp and piercing. Imagine a bustling Thanksgiving dinner, the rich aroma of turkey wafting through the air, pumpkin pie cooling on the counter. Friends and family gather around the table, laughter ringing out like music. But beneath the surface, tensions simmer.

Picture James, a young man with dreams of following Christ, sitting across from his father, a staunch traditionalist. As the meal unfolds, the conversation turns to faith. James speaks of his desire to serve at the local shelter, to share the love of Jesus with those in need. His father’s face hardens, eyes narrowing, a shadow crossing the joy of the day. “You want to waste your life on those people?” he snaps. The air grows thick, the laughter falters, and a chasm opens between them like a crevasse in a mountain.

“Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth,” Jesus warns us. “I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.” This is no gentle Jesus; this is a radical dividing line. Family members cast wary glances, as James’s mother tries to mediate, her heart torn in two. This is the violence of division—Thanksgiving tables now battlegrounds, phone calls left unanswered.

In the aftermath, James grapples with the words of Jesus: “Whoever loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me.” The cost of discipleship is steep.
